Table grapes and vintage (Feb–Apr) then winter citrus mean months of continuous work at serious scale. Piece rates on grapes can pay well if you're quick; labour-hire is everywhere, so vet your contractor hard. Cheap living, decent-sized town, solid backpacker crowd. Verdict: fastest place to rack up days in late summer and autumn.

3. The Riverland, SA — the quiet achiever

Renmark, Berri and Loxton chain stone fruit into vintage into citrus, so one region can carry you for six months. Costs are low, work is steady, and there's less competition than the east-coast hotspots. Social scene is smaller but tight. Verdict: best pay-to-cost ratio in the country.

4. Shepparton & the Goulburn Valley, VIC — the summer classic

Peaches, nectarines and pears from December, apples into autumn — big crews, established farms, and only two hours from Melbourne. Summer heat is real and the season has a definite end, so have your next move planned. Verdict: the best southern-summer base.

5. Griffith & the Riverina, NSW — the long game

The citrus season runs roughly April to November — one of Australia's longest — plus grapes and stone fruit either side. Employers know the backpacker drill, and hourly work is common. Town life is modest but friendly. Verdict: turn up almost any month and find something.

6. Tully & Innisfail, QLD — the mud money

Bananas never stop, so neither does the work: humping bunches in tropical humidity, year-round, often hourly. It's the hardest work on this list and the wettest town in Australia — but the days never pause and reef trips are on your doorstep. Verdict: toughest gig, most reliable clock.

7. Donnybrook & the South West, WA — the scenic route

Apples roughly February to May, stone fruit before, vineyards around Margaret River next door. Less competition than the east coast, gorgeous coastline, wineries and surf on your days off. 8. The Huon Valley, TAS — the summer postcard
