You can be the hardest worker in the hostel, but if your resume looks like it came from another planet, you'll get ghosted. Australian employers expect a particular style — and the good news is it's simple, casual and quick to put together once you know the rules. Get this right and you'll be fielding callbacks while everyone else is still wondering why nobody's replying.

"Resume" or "CV"? And how long?
In Australia people say resume (not CV). Keep it to two pages, max. Recruiters skim — they want to see you're reliable, available and not going to disappear after a week, not read your life story.
Drop the stuff that's normal back home but weird here:
- No photo of yourself
- No date of birth, marital status or religion
- No full home address — your suburb or just "currently in Brisbane" is plenty
- No need for a personal headshot or fancy design; clean and readable wins
What to actually include
The essentials, top to bottom
- Name and contact details — Aussie mobile number and email
- Your visa status — say it clearly: "Working Holiday Visa (subclass 417), eligible to work in Australia." This is huge; employers want to know upfront.
- A short professional summary — two or three lines: who you are, what you do, your availability
- Work experience — most recent first, with bullet points of what you did
- Skills — RSA, White Card, barista experience, forklift licence, driver's licence, etc.
- References — "Available on request" is fine, or list one or two
Make your experience punchy
Use bullet points starting with action words and, where you can, numbers:
- "Served up to 200 covers a shift in a busy 80-seat restaurant"
- "Handled cash and EFTPOS, balanced a till to zero each night"
- "Trained two new staff members during peak season"
Numbers make you look competent even if the job was casual.
The cover letter
For hospitality and labouring, a short cover letter (or even a friendly email) is often enough. Keep it to a few tight paragraphs:
- What you're applying for and that you're available now
- Why you're a good fit — relevant experience, your visa, how long you can commit
- A warm sign-off with your phone number
Aussie workplaces are relationship-driven and pretty informal. A genuine, friendly tone beats stiff corporate language every single time. Be a human, not a robot.
Where and how to apply
Spray-and-pray rarely works. Mix your channels:
- Big job boards — good for ongoing and skilled roles
- Backpacker-focused job apps and boards — fast casual gigs, farm work, hospo
- Walk-ins — for cafes, bars, restaurants and shops, print a stack of resumes and hand them over in person during quiet hours (mid-afternoon is ideal). This still works brilliantly in Australia.

- Word of mouth — tell everyone in your hostel you're looking

Nailing the interview
Interviews for casual work are usually relaxed — sometimes it's just a chat over the bar. Still, show up sharp:

- Be upfront about your availability and how long you'll stay — employers have been burned by backpackers who vanish, so honesty earns trust
- Show enthusiasm and a willingness to learn — attitude often beats experience for casual roles
- Have a question ready — about the team, the shifts, or busy periods
Common questions to prep for
- "How long are you in town for?"
- "What's your availability — weekends, nights, early starts?"
- "Have you done this kind of work before?"
- "Do you have your RSA / White Card / [relevant ticket]?"
Answer the availability question honestly but positively. "I'm here for at least three months and happy to work weekends and nights" is music to a manager's ears.

- Two pages or fewer
- Visa status stated clearly
- No photo, no DOB
- Aussie phone number that actually works
- Spell-checked (Australian spelling — "organise", not "organize")
